## The Challenge

A major NHS hospital in Birmingham required a fire safety refurbishment across multiple wards and departments. Existing timber-framed partitions and standard glass panels did not meet current fire safety requirements under Approved Document B. The hospital needed EI60 fire-rated glass systems for ward corridors, stairwell enclosures, and operating theatre viewing panels — all while maintaining operational continuity in a live hospital environment. The scope included coordination with infection control teams, as all work areas had to meet healthcare hygiene standards during and after installation. Programme constraints were driven by NHS funding cycles — the works had to be substantially complete within a single financial year to align with capital expenditure approvals.

## Our Solution

Glass Technique Ltd supplied and coordinated the installation of EI60 fire-rated glass systems across the hospital's key fire compartmentation zones. The work was phased to minimise disruption to hospital operations, with installations scheduled during quiet periods and weekends. Glass panels were specified with certified steel frames and intumescent seals to achieve the required EI60 rating. Operating theatre viewing panels used fire-rated laminated glass with acoustic properties for dual performance. Each installation phase was risk-assessed in collaboration with the hospital's facilities management team, with temporary fire safety measures in place throughout the works. All frames and seals were sourced from system houses holding third-party certification to EN 1634, ensuring traceability for the hospital's fire safety records.

## Results

The hospital achieved full compliance with current fire safety regulations. All installations were completed without disrupting patient care or hospital operations. The project was delivered on schedule and within budget, with full certification documentation provided for the hospital's fire safety records. Building control signed off all fire compartmentation zones on first inspection, and the hospital's facilities team received complete EN 1634 certification packs for ongoing maintenance and compliance audits. The phased approach meant no ward was taken out of service for more than a single shift during installation.
